Sand and Dragons

Florence and Toledo Skateparks

It’s day four of our solstice tour and we start things off at the Florence skatepark. After a short delay due to sand removal from the park, MC and Shawn started their search for lines to the big walls. The prior days activities were taking their toll and the session was kept short.

With Florence in the bag, it was off to Toledo skatepark for our second stop of the day. Some of the features at Toledo include a three and a half foot over-pocket, some cool concrete stamp work, both inside and outside the park and flow bowl with a spine. When we arrived, a crew from Albany was shredding the park, helping boost the stoke level of the session. Check out a gallery and photos from the Florence and Toledo sessions after the turn.

Two Dudes, a Dog and a Bowl

Qbert Bowl

The Qbert bowl has been decommissioned, so without further delay, here’s a little memorial to our square blue friend. No more free passes, dog dodging in the shallow or bouts of hay fever from the grass field. Hopefully someone grabbed some of that sweet Qbert tile and some chunks of the faceted coping before it met its demise. You know the drill, gallery and photos after the turn.

Alphabet of Sound: I-Q

YouTube Tuesday for July 8, 2008

Last week on YouTube Tuesday, we explored some A-H bands. So this week, we continue the journey and explore some bands that fall into the I-Q set. Well, really just I-P, we didn’t find a band that fit for Q so we doubled up on the letter M to make-up for our lameness. Get your groove on after the turn and, by all means, feel free to share your I-Q picks. Next week we finish the series with R-Z.

Sunset Session

Reedsport Skatepark

We rolled into Reedsport as the sun was starting to set making this the last session of the day. A few locals were lurking about as Shawn and MC sized-up the park. MC pulled out some reserve wood while Shawn began to test pockets and hips. Reedsport offers some organic terrain outside of the norm and that’s part of its appeal. Some of the features include a large funnel for those that like the opportunity to loop, a large vert pocket with stamped tile and a large hip for blasting. The park seems to be holding up well with respect to the construction and the walls have a few interesting pieces of art on them. Check out a full gallery along with some select photos after the turn. We held up in Reedsport for the evening with only Florence, Toledo and Lincoln City left to skate on our final day.

Union of the Snake

Monday Cover Vol. 2 Issue 34 - Sarah Scanlan

It’s big, it’s fast and it’s wrath is fierce. This week’s Monday Cover skater, Sarah Scanlan, skates the beast with respect and determination. Check out this frontside air in one gnarly snakerun at Lincoln City. Sick, sick, sick. See the full frame version of the photo after the turn.

Congratulations Sarah!

Gabriel Park in 3D

Gabriel Park in 3D

The official opening for Gabriel Park Skatepark is this coming Friday, July 11th at 1:30 pm. The park is located at SW 45th and Nevada. We’ll see you at the park on Friday. Flipping for Art

MC flips for art

Sometimes you come upon a universal constant by accident. In this case, MC continues a series of photos based on a reoccurring image that seems to appear at just about every skatepark. See what made MC go head-over-heels at Holly Farm after the turn. Note that the image may not be suitable for folks that are offended by drawings of genitalia.

Wolf’s Blood to Polar 3

Sleestock 2008 @ Lincoln City, Oregon

Last weekend, we took a little trip out to Lincoln City for Sleestock v3.0. Our trip to the coast was slightly delayed when Polar 3’s engine became hot as balls after a water hose failure. No worries though, Grover came to the rescue with his superior Vanagon repair skills; see GVK for some video footage.

When we arrived in Lincoln City, Sleestock was in full swing and folks seemed to be preoccupied with the recently added snakerun. Check out some of the action from Saturday and Sunday after the turn.

Blue Bowls Rule

Port Orford Skatepark

From Brookings, we moved on to Port Orford and one of the coolest little parks on the coast. The main feature of this park is the big blue bowl with a clam shell and a great hip to boot. Zac, one of the locals, was shredding hard and showed us the line for grinding the lip of the clam; no kidding. MC and Shawn got to work immediately and both gave the park a big thumbs up. If you find yourself near Port Orford with your board, do yourself a favor and skate the park; it’s a good one. Once again, there’s a gallery of all the photos along with a few select photos after the turn. Next stop Reedsport.
