Somewhere Over the Stairs

Monday Cover 29 - Mark Conahan

If Oz had a bowl, it might look like the newly painted Donald bowl. This week’s Monday Cover features Mark Conahan grinding frontside over the stairs. Anyone that has skated this bowl knows that the line over the stairs isn’t a gimme. Dare we call MC the Wizard? Grinds, inverts and airs, oh my! Pardon our loose usage of Frank L. Baum’isms.

Congratulations Mark, The Contented Skater!

See a couple of bowl pics after the turn…..

Ollie Airs by Steve Grover

Grover FS Ollie Film Strip
So I can’t remember how long I have been doing front and backside-ollies. But I do remember wanting to copy Adam Luxford’s ollies at Stone Edge in Florida circa 1990. That kid was doing them waist to chest high and covering four sheets no problem. I also copied this guy Larry from Virginia Beach. He would do huge B-side and F-side ollies. I know I learned the B-side ollie from Bill Fergueson around ’91. Modern Skate and Surf [of Michigan] did a 24hr skate benefit for the school of the blind. I remember sitting on the deck while the good guys were riding ( Tocco, O.P. Moore Mank, Scott Werner, Danforth) just to name a few, many more were in attendance. Fergueson had the B-side ollie wired. I saw his secret and stole it. Now I can do them.

A ollie is basically a giant kick turn. It is truly that simple. Here’s how the ollie air is done.

Cones-n-Concrete

Park Slalom Banner

On June 1st, a park slalom event was held at the Aumsville skatepark as part of the Oregon State Games. The turn out was good and folks seemed to be enjoying themselves. Who would have thought a few plastic cones duct taped to the walls of a skatepark could be so much fun. Thanks to Pat and the other volunteers for putting on a great event.

For more pictures, links and race results, click on through to the other side…. Next stop on the park slalom tour is West Linn on June 23rd. Get all the details from our pals over at Skate and Annoy.

The New Brood

Adam Kays @ Aumsville

If this were Del Mar and the year was 1979, you might think this is Chris Strople mid-layback air a la striped socks. Well, it’s Aumsville skatepark, the year is 2007 and the skater is Adam Kays, this week’s Monday Cover featured skater. We caught Adam in this stylin’ layback air between runs at the recent Oregon State Games Park Slalom event. Adam took silver in his division and had the third fastest time overall.

Congratulations Adam and we dig the socks!

Concretins

If Tree does a stapler on the back of a cradle at Battle Ground, does it make a sound? Who cares, it’s rad! Check it out in more detail after the turn along with another zen-like photo of an unidentified flying object. Now go skate!
