First order of business, a big thanks to Tyler and Damon at Cal Skate for keeping the images flowing for what we call, Cal Skate Relics. This week, we head back down to Waterfront Park for a street style contest, circa 1986. Check out a sea-of-skate-humanity after the turn. Thanks for the flashback! Twas a great time to be a skater in pdx.
who wears short shorts
I seem to remember Bill Reese jumping into the river after his run….maybe it was the next year?
Not sure if this is ’86 or not. Definitely a sea of humanity and the visible point when skateboarding gained some traction in PDX. Props to Howard for throwing the contests, skatepark activism, and keeping a shop open in the early 80s ( the dark ages to most, but some of the best of times for those who were around).
Most of the pics are shot at a distance but here’s what jumped out at me:
#2- ( sitting L to R) Judges Danny Sargent, unknown, Adam Musekant, Tyrone Talbert, Howard Weiner, Nick Clark (sitting).
#3- Dan Feldman- Hood Plant
#15- Howard’s holding the board, Din Johnson (Owner-Ristretto Roasters/ Buy some of his coffee and vibe him to come out and skate!) to his right, and Jeremy ?( mid 80s Cal Skate employee). Not sure about the rest of them..
I’ve never seen a pic of the bomb drop in to the river. That would be cool to see after all these years.
